Care & Community in South Africa

An older volunteer works with South African teachers and caregivers at her placement in Cape Town

South Africa is a fantastic destination for older volunteers with an interest in meaningful travel and cultural immersion. If you join our two week Care & Community in South Africa Grown-up Special, you will be based in Cape Town, where you will travel and work with other volunteers your age. You do not need any experience or special skills to take part. All you need is enthusiasm and a willingness to make a difference.

In Cape Town, you will volunteer at an underprivileged school and work with children aged 7-13. Along with your fellow volunteers, you will teach a variety of classes including IT. Here, you will be able to contribute to the students’ educational development and teach them valuable life skills, sharing stories about life in your home country.

In the afternoons, you will be able to make a lasting contribution to the school by painting a classroom and participating in other maintenance activities. This is a great way for volunteers to help give disadvantaged students a healthier learning environment.

During your time abroad, you will live with a host family, which allows you to become fully immersed in the local way of life. Evenings are set aside for cultural or leisure activities organized by Projects Abroad staff, including visits to Table Mountain, Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, and the historic Robben Island. On the weekend, we will organize a trip to the famous Garden Route that will allow you to fully experience the beauty of South Africa and enjoy the breath-taking natural environment.
