Community Organic Farm Volunteer Project in Argentina

Projects Abroad volunteers can join our Community Farming project in Argentina and work on an organic vegetable farm at a school in Rio Ceballos. All volunteers receive training from a local specialist, so no farming or gardening experience is needed, making this project a great fit for all ages, from students on break to professionals and families.

Volunteering on the organic farm you will help with all aspects of the farm. In the process, you will learn how to grow your own vegetables, including the importance of the plot location, availability of sunshine, proper size of growing areas, how often to water, and the selection of vegetables depending on the season.

Depending on the time of year you arrive and the development of the project, you could be helping with planting new seeds, building and fencing enclosures, creating a display area for seeds and herbs, harvesting, and selling the vegetables. Volunteers also arrange workshops at the farm to help educate local people about the advantages of sustainable farming and how to get started growing their own vegetables.

The farm is located in Rio Ceballos, at the foot of the Sierras Chicas Mountains, about 30km north of our main base in Cordoba. Rio Ceballos is mainly mountainous and has a mild dry climate. Volunteers live with local host families close to the farm.

Helping the Local Community

The vegetable farm is situated on a site at a public secondary school. While volunteering in Argentina on this project you will have the opportunity to work and socialize with local students, who will also be helping with the farm. The school was only started in March 2011, when the teachers and students built the school themselves with environmentally friendly materials. The classrooms are made out of adobe and the construction is not yet fully completed.

The school where the farm is located does not receive any support from the government, so some of the vegetables grown are sold affordably to local families. The money raised helps with the school expenses.

This project is available for less than a month if you don't have time to join us for a month or more. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for shorter durations for both the host community and the volunteer. Although you will gain valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the local community please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone participating for a longer period.
